There are 33 miles of the Badger State Trail which
are now complete. The northernmost seven miles are slated
to be asphalt paved in 2010, connecting the Badger with
the Capital City State Trail in Madison. The
completed portion runs from Purcell Road on the north, to
the Jane Addams Recreation Trail in Illinois. Three
miles south of Belleville, is the 1200-foot Stewart
Tunnel. It's not the longest trail tunnel in
Wisconsin, but is probably the darkest because the tunnel
curves. At Monticello, the Badger crosses the Sugar
River State Trail which one can take to New Glarus or all
the way to Brodhead. The trail passes
through valley farmland and past steep green hills. Along the way you'll cross forty trestle
bridges. A daily or annual state trail pass is
required for riders 16 and older.
