In the very northern part of Minnesota, the Mesabi Trail runs between Grand Rapids and Ely. When completed, the
trail will run 132 miles and connect more than 25
communities. In 2009, approximately 102 miles of
trail will be complete. Once completed, the Mesabi Trail will be one of the longest paved trails
in the United States. Only part of the trail lies along
abandoned rail lines; the rest climbs hills and dips
and dodges around natural and
manmade obstacles — bogs and slag heaps, rock cuts
and pine trees. East of Hibbing the trail is fairly
flat, but going west of Hibbing the trail is
quite hilly.
Many campgrounds and local parks are easily accessible
from the trail.
Food, lodging, shopping, antiquing, golfing, fishing,
camping and swimming are all in close proximity to
the trail. |
